  7.     Sleight of hand on a grand scale: that's what made
  8. magician DAVID COPPERFIELD famous and savings and loan
  9. executives infamous. So it's only fitting that Copperfield has
  10. purchased a major collection of magic memorabilia from the
  11. Resolution Trust Corporation, the federal agency in charge of
  12. cleaning up the S&L mess. The collection, originally acquired
  13. by a now defunct savings bank, includes artifacts like Houdini's
  14. private letters. "It's a playground, a dream," gushes
  15. Copperfield, who beat out the Library of Congress for the booty.
  16. "But it's not for curiosity seekers," he says. Only "qualified
  17. performers and scholars" will have access.
